At Juvare, we are immensely proud to celebrate the achievements of one of our most valued clients, Dr. Sara Lesley Pulford. Recently, Sara was honored with the prestigious Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List. This recognition highlights her exceptional dedication, innovation, and leadership in the field of emergency services.

A Journey of Dedication and Service

Dr. Sara PulfordSara joined the SA State Emergency Service (SASES) in 2013, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a passion for public service. In her current role as Manager of Information Systems, she has been instrumental in driving technological advancements that have significantly enhanced the operational capabilities of SASES.

Her career in emergency services began even earlier with the SA Country Fire Service, where she served for four years in various roles, including Community Education and Operational Systems. Additionally, Sara has been a dedicated volunteer with the SA Country Fire Service for 20 years, holding the critical position of Deputy Incident Controller during significant fire emergencies.

Leadership and Innovation in Action

Sara’s impact extends far beyond her official roles. She performs the role of SASES Chief of Staff on a rotating roster, providing invaluable expertise in public information and warnings. Her mentorship to other staff in these vital leadership roles ensures the continuous development of future leaders in emergency management.

Nationally, Sara has contributed to numerous emergency operations as a Jurisdictional Liaison Officer, notably during severe weather events in New South Wales in 2021 and 2022, and Tropical Cyclone Seroja in Western Australia in 2021.

One of Sara’s most notable achievements is her leadership in the development and establishment of the SES Incident and Information Management System. Her innovative approach and collaboration have adapted this platform for use by other agencies, earning her global recognition as a thought innovator in the field.

Projects that Set Industry Standards

Under Sara’s guidance, several groundbreaking projects have come to fruition, including Respond52 and SASES GeoHub. These initiatives have significantly improved access to information and mapping for both staff and volunteers. The integration of these systems into the operational framework of SASES has positioned the organization as a leader in geographical information and system integration across Australia.

During the 2022/23 River Murray Flood Event, Sara’s leadership was pivotal. Her team introduced significant upgrades to existing systems, with a particular focus on innovative geospatial applications. These enhancements played a critical role in managing the event and exemplify Sara’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve emergency management practices.

Sara’s dedication to the emergency services sector is truly inspiring. Her commitment to developing innovative information systems has not only advanced the capabilities of SASES but has also attracted international recognition. Her work continues to shape the future of emergency management, setting new standards for efficiency and effectiveness.
