Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama early Wednesday morning. The Category 2 storm had sustained winds of 105 mph, which weakened to 80 mph by mid-morning. Winds, heavy rains, and storm surge created a dangerous situation in the storm’s path.

Flooding turned streets into rivers in Pensacola, Florida, and necessitated a number of water rescues in Gulf Shores on Wednesday. Coastal and low-lying areas from Mississippi to Florida were under evacuation orders, and shelters have been opened to accommodate evacuees.

As it moves to the north and northeast, the slow-moving hurricane is expected to dump large amounts of rain and cause flooding throughout Alabama, the Florida panhandle, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas, resulting in many evacuations, power outages, and road closures. According to PowerOutage.us more that 500,000 customers are currently without power.
