[Infographic] Taking a Look at Emergency Management Careers

Every ten years, approximately 27 million people are displaced globally due to natural disasters. Additionally, there is a wide variety of human-caused chaos and somewhat lesser disruptions, ranging from bomb threats to fires and protests.

With the amount of information available through social media, almost everyone in today’s world is aware of the challenges communities face when disasters strike. Not only are people trying to piece their lives back together, but behind the scenes, emergency management professionals are working tirelessly to cope with the ensuing fallout, which usually includes saving lives and protecting their communities.

Disasters and disruptions demand the attention and skills of emergency management professionals. One of the key goals for emergency management professionals is to work with others across multiple agencies to manage hazards and grapple with disasters more quickly. The difficulties they face in doing this impacts how effectively they can provide communities with a framework for survival.

In addition to natural disasters, there are a number of other scenarios and industries that require the expertise of emergency management professionals. Some of the most common industries that employ emergency management professionals include state and local government, healthcare, scientific and technical services, and higher education.

Given the ongoing increase in the frequency, impact, and devastation of disasters and disruptions, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that jobs in emergency management will continue to grow steadily into 2024.
